Weekend on the Rock, September 18-20, 2015: The Bee!

Here are Inside Bainbridge recommendations for the weekend of September 18-20, 2015:

1. Family Movie Matinee: Monkey Kingdom
When: Friday, 3:30-5 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N
Why: Because it’s Tina Fey doing the voice of that monkey mom raising her new baby in the southern Asia jungle.

2.  Rye and Barley at Bainbridge Brewery
When: Friday, 4-7 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Island Brewery, 9415 Coppertop Loop
Why: The brewery boys are back with bouzouki and bodhran and beer. No cover. Dog Wagon will bring the dogs.

Beneath the Waves3. Beneath the Waves Film Festival
When: Friday, 6-9 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, 550 Winslow Way E
Why: Salish Sea Expeditions hosts a unique film festival focused on marine science exploration and stewardship of the marine environment. Films will be presented by guest panelists, who will be available after the screening for questions. The Bistro will be open at 6 for guests to enjoy a light dinner and drinks prior to the screening; the film festival will begin at 7.

This event is free, but donations are welcome to support marine science education on the Salish Sea. Children ages four and up are encouraged to attend. Kids under 14 must be accompanied by a parent.

4. Free Range Films: “Bomb Trains: The Crude Gamble of Oil by Rail” and “Coal”
When: Friday, 7-10 p.m.
Where: Suquamish United Church of Christ, 18732 Division Ave. NE
Why: Find out about proposed oil trains in our state from two sobering films. Following the screenings, guest speaker Jeremiah (Jay) Julius, a member of the Lummi Nation Tribal Council, will lead a discussion of the regional implications.

The event is free and open to the public.

5. Library U—What’s New in Neuroscience?
When: Saturday, 10-11:30 a.m.
Where: Bethany Lutheran Church & Preschool, 7968 Finch Road Northeast
Why: I often find myself wondering, “What’s new in neuroscience?” followed by “Where could I get some chocolate?” This two-part series on the latest in brain studies begins with New Insights into Childhood Brain Development. A panel of Seattle-area experts will discuss how these discoveries can be used to improve the way children learn in the classroom. Then on September 26 the series picks up with New Horizons in Brain Health. This time the panel will discuss cutting-edge research on age-related brain disorders, the new science of “brain health,” and current experiments in brain enhancement.

6. Gardening with Ferns
When: Saturday, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N
Why: Part three of the four-week saga of the fern. John van den Meerendonk, designer and installer of the Fern Garden at the Bainbridge Public Library, continues his exploration of the unfurling, ubiquitous plant.

The class is free, but participants are asked to give back equivalent class hours for the maintenance and care of the library’s Fern Garden. To register, please sign up at the information desk or call the Library at (206) 842-4162.

7. Beginning Jewelry Making
When: Saturday 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Where: Rolling Bay BARN, 11272 Sunrise Drive NE
Why: Make a copper pin by cutting, filing, soldering, and forming metal. The class meets for four sessions. Texturing, rivets, studio set-up, safety, and tool buying will be also be covered. No experience is necessary.

8. Kitsap Solar Tour
When: Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Where: Tad & Susan Parrington Residence, 24318 Taree Drive NE, Kingston
Why: The tour starts with a grid-tied solar presentation by Power Trip Energy. Then you guide yourself on a tour of three homes in Kitsap County that use solar power.

Free.

9. Meet the Artist: David Eisenhour
When: Saturday, 1-3 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, Beacon Gallery, 1st Floor, 550 Winslow Way East
Why: Pepper Eisenhour with questions about his work and process. He will answer.

Free admission.

10. Fairy Garden Workshop
When: Saturday, 1-3 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Gardens, 9415 Miller Rd NE
Why: This workshop teaches you how to make a miniature fairy garden, which is good because it is certainly more likely to be of use than a giant fairy garden, as giant fairies are rare, I hear. The class fee includes hands-on instruction, soil, starting materials, your choice of three starter plants, and the requisite fairy dust. Participants get 20 percent off the regular price of the items used for the fairy garden, including the container, additional plants, and miniature accessories.

Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. $18.

11. Lives and Lies of Eagledale
When: Saturday, 3 p.m.
Where: Heyday Farm, 4370 Old Mill Road
Why: The Historical Museum is spinning tales again to raise money. Read more here.

Library Adult Spelling Bee12. Bainbridge Library Adult Spelling Bee
When: Saturday, 7-10 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Performing Arts, 200 Madison Ave. N.
Why: It’s the third annual wacky spelling team competition, involving costumes, wine, and dessert. Proceeds from the event help maintain the library’s building and grounds. Read more here.

13. Fall Lawn Care
When: Sunday, 1-2 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Gardens, 9415 Miller Rd NE
Why: Lawns get especially hungry about this time of year, so I hear. Steve Minch will discuss how to seed a new lawn, overseed an existing lawn, and fertilize and prepare yards of all ages for winter.

14. Makin’ Life Sweet
When: Sunday, 1-3 p.m.
Where: IslandWood, 4450 Blakely Avenue NE
Why: Beekeepers and educators lead participants of all ages in a bee-dazzling and bee-guiling experience. You’ll suit-up like a beekeeper, “pollinate” the flowers in the IslandWood garden, communicate via waggle-dancing, join local candlemakers in designing beeswax candles, visit a working beehive, and taste some honey.
